I am not allowed to see you as you truly are.
Not allowed to look beyond the words you offer me,
Or lift the mask you wear so unconvincingly
When trawling through market stalls
Or out walking the dog.
I am not allowed even to whisper the question
We both want answered with innocent clarity,
The honesty of savants who cannot learn to lie.
We just cant say we love each other even when alone
Or standing in a crowd face to face.
To be honest it seems I`m just too scared to try;
And I`ve heard tales of your shyness but don`t believe in them.
Even a hug is not enough to break these barriers down,
Walls built of unconvincing strategies, of tears we fail to cry.
